Lead Systems Engineer

As the number of connected electronics products continue to grow for Allegion, the need to drive system architecture, reuse, and leadership in multidisciplinary integration of our software and electronics designs is increasing.

The primary responsibility of the Lead Systems Engineer is to be the systems engineering functional lead for one or more new product development projects as well as performing feature growth and maintenance of existing product lines. In this role you will lead a team of cross-functional product development and/or product support engineers and be responsible for overall product definition, architecture development, and system integration activities that span software, firmware, electrical, and mechanical design components. In early phases of new projects, you will work with marketing, product management, sales, and end customers to properly scope requirements to define initial design concepts with appropriate cross-functional team members. Later phases of programs focus on the integration, verification, and validation of the final product individually as well as within larger ecosystems. Throughout, the Lead Systems Engineer is responsible for coordinating technical execution to ensure the various aspects of the design are properly implemented for successful product launch.

This role's primary product development and sustaining activities are within the residential and/or commercial cloud connected space, and thus experience with IoT devices, software/firmware, and general IT is a strong differentiator.

Job Duties include:

  • Define software and product design requirements and specifications to meet customer, marketing, and internal requirements

  • Develop and analyze design concepts

  • Design complex high level systems and subsystems architectures employing modern cryptographic methods and best known cybersecurity practices

  • Define design trade-offs as necessary to ensure the highest level of product performance and quality

  • Ensure designs meet product requirements (functional, cost, quality, reliability, etc.) and that requirement risks are evaluated and mitigated early in the process

  • Coordinate creation of engineering development timelines and track development activities to meet delivery and cost commitments

  • Lead problem-solving activities as necessary for fielded products or new product development utilizing appropriate tools

  • Prioritize activities, define appropriate task scope, and lead integration of subsystems to meet product design requirements

  • Be the technical contact for key customers and OEM partners as new products are introduced into the marketplace.

  • Provide clear communications to technical team members as well as to other leaders and managers

Knowledge & Work Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in electronic and/or firmware/software analysis and development – prefer both

  • Demonstrated experience in product design from concept to production

  • Must have significant experience in software systems engineering design

  • Previous experience with low-power wireless communications products is beneficial (WiFi, Bluetooth LE, Zigbee, etc).

  • Strong requirements management experience

  • Strong engineering project management skills

  • Must have demonstrated experience leading project teams to deliver programs on time and on budget

  • Must be comfortable leading a multidisciplinary team with members of various experience levels through all stages of product development and problem solving activities

  • Must be a creative thinker with high initiative and high achievement goals

  • Demonstrated technical coaching and mentoring skills

  • Knowledge of cybersecurity methods and protocols preferred

  • Experience with cloud service architectures (AWS, Azure, etc.) preferred

Education & Minimum Years of Experience:

  • BS in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field

  • At least 8 years consumer product design experience
